Robert Venina and James Spradley have divided a burnout into 5 stages in their 1981 “The Work/Stress Connection” book, helping you understand what to expect from a burnout.
📚Stage 1 – Honeymoon
Just like in a relationship, the honeymoon stage means everything is perfect! You experience high job satisfaction, commitment and energy. You genuinely love what you are doing.
📚Stage 2 – Balancing Act
You handle job stress better on some days than others, and you may start to experience minor job dissatisfaction, inefficiency or fatigue.
📚Stage 3 – Chronic Symptoms
The symptoms above escalate and turn into chronic exhaustion, anger, depression or even physical illness.
📚Stage 4 – Crisis
The peak. Symptoms above become critical.
📚Stage 5 – Enmeshment
Symptoms become so embedded in your life that it may seem like you have real physical or emotional issues.
The goal here is to know your warning signs for each stage early in advance and come up with healthy responses!
